Discounts
Under Discounts you make codes that customers type at checkout, and automatic discounts that apply by themselves. Owners and managers can open the page. It lists every discount with its type, method, what it applies to, its conditions, how many times it has been used and its status.
Create a discount
Press Create discount and pick one of four types:
- Amount off products: a percentage or rands off chosen products or collections.
- Buy X get Y: the customer buys some items and gets others free or at a percentage off.
- Amount off order: a percentage or rands off the whole order.
- Free delivery: takes the delivery charge off, with an optional cap.
Each type can be a code or an automatic discount.
Codes and automatic discounts
A discount code is typed by the customer in the code box at checkout. Use capital letters, digits and hyphens, up to 24 characters. Two discounts can't share a code.
An automatic discount has no code. Give it a title, or leave the title blank and we write one, like "10% off on orders over R500.00". It applies by itself whenever its conditions are met. In the cart, shoppers see it as an offer, with how much more to add to qualify, and it switches to "Applied" once they do. An automatic Buy X get Y also shows a note such as "Buy 2, get 1 free" on the products it covers.
Worth knowing: an automatic discount's title can never be typed in as a code.
Value, products and requirements
- Amount: a percentage from 1 to 100, or rands off.
- Products and collections: for Amount off products, tick the products and collections it applies to. Rands off is shared across the matching items in the cart, in proportion to their price.
- Buy X get Y: choose how many the customer buys and from which items, how many they get and from which items, and whether those are free or a percentage off (1 to 99). The cheapest qualifying items are the ones discounted. If the customer buys two sets, two sets are discounted, unless you tick Only once per order.
- Free delivery: Covers delivery up to is optional. Leave it blank to take off the whole charge. A collection option has no delivery charge, so there is nothing to take off.
- Minimum requirements: a minimum spend, or a minimum number of items. For Amount off products they are counted on the items it applies to. For free delivery, the minimum spend is judged on the subtotal before any discounts. Buy X get Y has no minimum.
- One use per customer: codes only. A customer is recognised by their email or phone number.
Limits and dates
Under Limits, tick Limit total number of uses, Set start date or Set end date. Dates and times are South African time (SAST).
The status column shows Active, Scheduled (start date not reached), Expired, Used up or Off. A customer who tries a code that has expired, not started or been used up sees a plain message saying so.
Worth knowing: a use is counted when a card or PayPal order is paid, or when an EFT or on-account order is placed. A card checkout that is abandoned at the payment page does not use up a code.
Editing, turning off and deleting
Press Edit to change the amount, products, minimums, limits and dates. The code or title and the type can't change, so make a new discount if you need either. The number of uses is kept when you edit. Turn off stops a discount without deleting it, and Turn on brings it back. Delete removes it after you confirm.
How discounts combine
- One item discount per order. That is one percentage, rands-off or Buy X get Y discount, whether it came from a code or an automatic discount. If more than one automatic discount applies, the one that saves the most is used.
- A code does not stack with an automatic discount. Whichever saves the shopper more applies, and a tie goes to the code. The cart or checkout tells the shopper which one applied.
- One free delivery discount, and it does combine with the item discount. The biggest saving wins, and a tie goes to the code.
- Gift cards bought in an order are never discounted. A discount code on a cart of only gift cards is refused.
Quantity breaks
"Buy 2, save 20%" tiers are on the same page, under Quantity breaks. They need no code. You switch them on per product with Quantity breaks apply to this product on the product form. See Products.
